Known as the main filming location for productions like Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and Troy, Malta is probably one of the most exotic locales I have ever visited. A rich history and eclectic culture make the Mediterranean archipelago both interesting and mysterious. My first cab driver of the trip gave me a great introduction, listing sites and restaurants to visit, and the best beaches for a swim. He also said that I "must try Isis wine." What is it? "It's a white Maltese wine." Wait what? I had no idea there was wine in Malta. What a nice surprise!
Thanks to the cab driver, I found "Isis" at Paranga Restaurant on St. George's Bay in St. Julian's near the Intercontinental Hotel. The modern restaurant not only had the best sea bass I've ever tasted, the wines were exceptional. "Isis" is a clean, crisp, unoaked Chardonnay from one of Malta's half a dozen wineries. The 47-acre Meridiana Wine Estate, located in center of Malta in Ta' Qali, produces a variety of reds and whites. One bottle of 2012 Meridiana "Melqart" Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot, and I knew I would need to come back as soon as possible.
