The Unfiltered Guide to Working with Wine | Book Review / by Brian Yost

The Unfiltered Guide to Working in Wine, by Hillary Zio. Xlibris.com (2016).

If you have ever considered pursuing a career in wine or even if you are a serious wine drinker interested in learning more, there is a plethora of options. Understanding which is the best avenue for achieving your goal can be daunting. It is often difficult to gage the veracity of information obtained online and few sources really fully define all of the opportunities. In her book, The Unfiltered Guide to Working in Wine, Hillary Zio helps her readers navigate the labyrinthine world of wine education, certification, and opportunity.

The Unfiltered Guide to Working in Wine is a single source of practical advice based on personal experiences in the industry. It is an absolute must read for anyone with ambitions in the world of wine.

In an effort not to spoil Zio’s best anecdote, I will just say that she was engaged tangentially in the fashion industry after college before deciding to break into the world of wine. Literally working her way up from the bottom, Zio gained experience and education along the way. There was little formal guidance available, so Zio navigated through the fog of rumor and misconception to work her way into the upper ranks of her industry.

The Unfiltered Guide to Working in Wine shares the lessons Zio learned along the way and organizes them into 112 pages of tips on everything from selecting the right program for certification to pursuing a career. There are outlines and examples for conducting wine education and even insights into the world of wine writing.

There was a definite need for Hillary Zio’s book. The Unfiltered Guide to Working in Wine is a single source of practical advice based on personal experiences in the industry. It is an absolute must read for anyone with ambitions in the world of wine.
